Booking a cruise online – do I need passport info?
When booking a cruise online, do they ask for passport number at that time, or do you provide that later, like when you board the ship?

NO! no passport information need when booking. After your booking is complete you will be requested to go back online at some point and enter a bunch of personal information including your citizenship and passport number. BUT, you have up until about 3 days before the cruise to complete all of this precruise information.
If you do not complete the pre-registration information they will request that you be at the cruise port at least 3 hours before departure time so that you can complete it. The reason for this is that all cruise lines must now provide to the Homeland Security office (Immigration) a complete listing of all passenger. and this must be provided to HS at least an hour before the ship set sail.
As a guide, here’s what’s on Royal Caribbean’s web site about the registration information:
“When you check-in online, it saves time. You won’t have to fill out any forms at the pier. When you and your party arrive, you’ll just need your signed SetSail pass, identification documents, and credit card that you register online.
First, gather the following information for all the guests you’re checking in:
Ship, sailing date and Royal Caribbean reservation number
Passport or appropriate proof of citizenship and identification
Home address
Emergency contact name with phone number
Travel plans before and after your cruise
Credit card for the Onboard Expense Account”

That is typically called “transfers” which mean that the cruise line makes arrangements to pick you up at the airport, generally by bus or mini-van, and drops you and your bags at the port. Then after the cruise they will take you back to the airport. You can request transfers both ways, or just one way if you want.
The price of transfers, or as you called it transportation is not really that much more costly than taking a taxi between the airport and the cruise port. Sometimes what seems like a lot is actually a few dollars more than a cab ride and the cruise line is making a little money on the transportation the same as it does with the cruise, and tours from the ship. Transfers vary in price because the distances from the airport to the port vary. For example, if you fly to Ft Lauderdale, Florida for a cruise out of Port Everglades, the port is only about 5 or 6 miles from the airport; about 15 minutes away, so its a much lower price than if you were cruising leaving the Rome airport and the cruise port is 80 miles, or an hour’s drive, away.
So distance from the port is the main reason. Then add in a little profit to cover the cost of renting and reserving the bus. The transportation, or transfers, are an option that you can decline and make your own plan to get to the port. Sometimes that makes sense and I have done that when I know that I can easily get a taxi to the pier or airport.

This is two parts-
Air travel “add on” is the airfare from your home airport to the cruise departure airport. This is the price of the airfare, based on their bulk rates. The down side is that they charge you an extra +/- $35 per person extra if you want to change what they offer (read “custom air”) along with their inflated price. I have found that their price is usually MORE than what I am able to book independently, plus I can choose to go a day earlier, or stay later. Just be sure to plan to fly early enough to allow for delays, luggage, taxi, etc.
Ground “transfers” are the price of the bus from the cruise departure airport to the pier, each way. Uniformed agents wait at baggage claim and direct you and your luggage to buses. They have a list of paid transfer passengers and try to round you up in groups. Although we once waited about 45 minute for some bozos who decided to stop and have drinks in the airport upon arrival <sigh>. This price is based on distance. But again, independent is cheaper- always. In Dover England, you walk 100 yards to the train to get you to London. Cruise line wanted $100 per person, while the train ticket was about $50!
If you are intelligent and independent, book your own. Ask on cruiselinefans.com, on your particular port, and you can get a good guess what it will cost.

Caribbean Cruise Discount May/June?
I’m getting married May 30, 2009 and for our honeymoon my fiancee and I want to take a 5-7 day cruise to the caribbean (preferably the western caribbean). Does anyone know if booking later would get us a better price or if there are any discounts for cruises right now out there? I’m a student, but I do not know if there’s any discounts for that. Also my parents are Auto Club members (I don’t know if they book it for us if they could get us a discount or anything). Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Oh also, is the price listed for a suite room, on like expedia etc., (in my case ,600) the price for one person? Or does that cover two people?

[NEW] Disney Dream Cruise Line & Aquaduck – Video Tour and Concept Art
www.marciodisney.blogspot.com – Disney Videos & News See the new video… it’s the same plus the virtual ride at Aquaduck: www.youtube.com When Disney Cruise Line debuts the new Disney Dream in early 2011, the ship will include multiple innovations never seen before in the industry. The aquaduck water coaster will sweep guests on a 765-foot high-speed flume ride with uphill acceleration and a swing-out loop letting you look down to the ocean 150 feet below. Guests staying in inside staterooms will enjoy views of the ocean and sky through Virtual Portholes with hi-def views, live from cameras on the Disney Dream’s exterior. Guests may also see Peach (the starfish from the Disney-Pixar film “Finding Nemo”) or Mickey Mouse pop by the Virtual Porthole. The Disney Dream will also cater to the unique vacation needs of individual family members. While young children play in interactive spaces recreating Disney-Pixar films “Toy Story” and “Monsters, Inc.”, teens and tweens each enjoy their own high-tech clubs, and parents indulge in The District – an adult-exclusive entertainment area of sophisticated bars and lounges. The Disney Dream is scheduled to depart on its maiden voyage Jan. 26, 2011 and will sail alternating three- and four-night cruises to the Bahamas and Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay. During summer months, the ship will alternate four- and five-night itineraries with two stops at Castaway Cay. Guests can book their Disney Dream cruise beginning Nov. 9, 2009 …

What other cruise lines are similar to Carnival and have itineraries to Mexico?
we’ve sailed Carnival twice and taken the only good 2 cruise itineraries to Mexico they offer (4 day Catalina and Ensenada. 7 day puerto vallarta, mazatlan, cabo san lucas)
my parents will only sail to Mexico and all of Carnival’s other itineraries are to the same places we’ve already visited just in altered orders. we can’t take the 8 day from San Diego due to vacation planning
so what’s another great cruise line with cruises to Mexico?

What cruise line would be appropriate for a romantic getaway?
I’m planning a vacation for later this year and I was wondering what cruise line is the best for couples. We are looking for cruiselines that are not so much family oriented, because we are looking to get away from kids for a while. Also something that is relatively inexpensive. I KNOW all cruises are rather pricy, but just give me some ideas of where to start. I’ve never been on a cruise before and I’m clueless as to where to begin my search. Any suggestions?
